NEW! The new Portland Literary Directory is now live with area resources, publications, venues and organizations in 20 different categories. See something missing? Let us know! Find this helpful? Let us know that, too!
Welcome to Prose City, your grassroots literary community in Portland, Oregon. Prose City was founded in 2024 by two Portlanders who hold a deep appreciation for all things reading, writing, conversation, and community, and made possible by a team of dedicated volunteers.

We exist to build community and facilitate connection, so please consider joining us for an upcoming event.
We understand the importance of affordability in fostering and nurturing a diverse community, so nearly all of our own events are offered at no charge. All time, labor, and expense is an offering from the Prose City crew to the community. If we do hold events that require significant expense for space, food, artists, materials, etc., we will offer them on a donation or sliding scale basis to cover only those costs.
Whether you’re a seasoned writer, an avid reader, a curious conversationalist, or someone just dipping your toes into the literary world, there’s a place for you here: from unique book clubs that delve deep into narratives and nuance, to writing workshops that celebrate and encourage your unique voice and creativity, and so many more. Our silent reading gatherings are perfect for those who simply want to enjoy the magic of reading quietly in the company of others doing the same.
We produce and host our own literary events, and we’re always excited to partner with other literary enthusiasts, as well — individuals, organizations, literary groups, bookshops, schools, and more. Every partnership and collaboration brings new energy and fresh perspectives.
Please note that we do not publish our events to the public. For now, they are by invitation only. If you think you might like to join our community and learn more about our upcoming events, please contact us via the Prose City interest form.
We want to hear from you. Whether it’s a suggestion for a book club read, a workshop idea, or just a desire to express your love for literature, reach out to us. Join us at Prose City, where your literary journey finds both a starting point and an ever-expanding horizon. Here, every word counts and every voice matters. We look forward to seeing you at an event or gathering soon!
Statement of Welcoming and Belonging
Language is very powerful. Language does not just describe reality. Language creates the reality it describes. — Desmond Tutu
We celebrate the power of words to unite, inspire, and transform. Our community is built on the pillars of respect, inclusivity, and a celebration of the myriad voices that make up the human experience. We welcome individuals from every race, ethnicity, gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, age, spiritual practice, ability, and background—and every intersection of these identities and experiences. So long as you share our unwavering commitment to the dignity, autonomy, and human rights of everyone, you’ll fit right in.
In our commitment to creating a safe and nurturing environment, now more than ever, we explicitly denounce and will not tolerate any form of bigotry, hatred, or oppressive speech or behavior. Our spaces and events are governed by respect in our interactions, and the dignity and worth of every individual is upheld and cherished. Each unique voice enriches our collective narrative and contributes to a deeper, more meaningful understanding of the world.
We hope you’ll join our grassroots literary community and discover that you, too, are a vital part of our collective story.
